Building For Your Future
At Maillot Homes not only are we considering what is inspiring and practical for your present but, if you are building your forever home, what features can be included to help you age in place. The below tips are also used to design and build homes for people with various mobilities to keep homes safe and liveable. For you and your guests, here’s just a few of our standard inclusions to design a home that lasts a lifetime.
Elevators
Staircases, a beautiful and dazzling feature in many of our homes, are increasingly difficult and dangerous for everyone as we age. The inclusion of an elevator in our designs allows for all levels of a home to remain liveable even when using a wheelchair, walker, or cane.
Elevators are also practical for day-to-day use when carrying large loads of groceries from the garage to the main floor of the home, moving furniture, or taking it easy when feeling particularly sore or unwell.
While typically associated with boring music and an uncomfortable proximity to strangers, we love designing elevators! We encourage picking a wallpaper that allows for a pop of personality, a small hidden hilarity that can be discovered by your guests, or an intricate design that can be appreciated anew time and time again.
Elevators are pricey but it is the ultimate inclusion to making your home accessible to all.
Wide Hallways and Doorways
We encourage the design of 4 foot to 6 foot wide hallways throughout the home, and not just major passageways. This inclusion allows for easy wheelchair passage and maneuvering.
In your present these wide hallways bring a sense of grandeur and airiness to your home, especially paired with our standard 9-10 foot high ceilings. You can showcase wide wood planks, interesting light features, and large expanses of wall for art pieces.
We also design and build doors to match the grandeur of the hallways. To age in place, or design for universal accessibility, we consider using levers instead of door knobs and the functionality of an easy open door.
Heated, Non-Slip Surfaces
Stepping on to cold tile after showering or shivering as you pad to the bathroom on a cold winter’s night, is no one’s ideal. The luxurious pleasure of dressing in a large ensuite closet with heated floors is also one more practical inclusion to your home that can allow comfort and ease as you grow older or require a lengthier time to bath, change, and get ready. Selecting non-slip flooring options, paired with well placed grab bars, can provide stability and confidence. While a seemingly expensive inclusion today can prevent falls in the future.
In addition to considering the feel and functionality of the surfaces in your home, the design can also include no unnecessary steps, like a lip to a shower. By designing the water to flow seamlessly we can ensure your bathroom floors stay dry while providing a safer and smoother entrance and exit to the shower.
And speaking of heated surfaces, why not a heated bench in the shower? Sitting to shower can prevent falls and make the process easier, and with heated comfort, even more enjoyable.
Bright Lighting & Remote Access
Picking out light fixtures is an exciting aspect to any custom home build process. In addition to the show stopping feature lighting, you can also include ample amounts of bright lighting with conveniently placed switches and remote-control access. Even your drapes can be put on a remote to allow for an easier closing and opening process.
Custom Cabinetry
In the custom home design process, you will have to pick your millwork which includes cabinetry specifically designed for your new home. Lower countertops with inset appliances, designing sinks with space beneath them to allow wheelchair users to roll directly up to the faucet, or considering how high to build storage are all benefits of building custom cabinetry.
These aging in place examples can ensure your forever home truly is a place to settle down well into your later years. With an eye to preventing strain, keeping things within easy reach, and considering how you will practically use your home in the future is part of every home we build. However, many of these additions are great for your current and everyday ease and comfort.
